“Monkey the Great” at the Red House Theater
I’ve had my eye on the Red House Theater in Ximindeng for a long time. I didn’t even know it was there when I first dropped in on the Red House. For anyone that doesn’t know, the Red House is a beautiful historic building in the Ximending area. As you come out of the Ximen MRT station, you find yourself at a very large and …
My Little Honey Moon at the Spot Taipei Film House – Foreign Brides in Taiwan
I returned to the Spot Taipei Film House to watch the second of the four films about foreign brides in Taiwan. I read in an article in the Taipei Times that these four films together are part of the event “We Are Family: Festival of New Immigrants” at the Spot. Also in this article is the interesting statistic that there are more than 450,000 of …
Immigrant Stories at the Spot Taipei Film House
Four interesting movies are playing at the Spot Taipei Film House in the month of May. They are Taiwanese movies and they offer a fascinating look at the experience of foreign women who marry men in Taiwan. I had been told that there were no English subtitles, but the other day I happened to catch a trailer for one of them, and it had English …

Urban Nomad, Returning to Olympus, a Singing Contest & More!
A not-so-quick note about recent goings-on in Taipei: The Urban Nomad film festival has been underway for the past ten or eleven days. I believe Sunday (April 22nd) was the last day. I went to see The Taiwan Oyster on the opening night of the festival. It was an interesting night. The venue for the festival is one of the huge warehouse-type buildings at Huashan …
“Go to Hell” at the Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theater Museum
A very friendly puppeteer from Italy greeted me in the entrance lobby of the Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theatre Museum. He apologized for his ‘Italian English”, but there was no need. I understood his English perfectly underneath his heavy (and endearing) Italian accent. He told me that there were four floors in the museum and that there was an outdoor patio on the fourth floor. Also, …
Evergreen Maritime Museum – Taipei
The Evergreen Maritime Museum is located in downtown Taipei. I stumbled across it almost by accident, and I was very glad I did. Though relatively unknown, it is an amazing museum with hundreds of elaborate models of famous ships throughout history, a display of maritime paintings, and technical hands-on displays of the components of modern ships.
Jing-Mei Detention Center and the White Terror
I’ve had a brochure for the Jing-Mei Human Rights Memorial and Cultural Park in my knapsack for a long time. I just never had the opportunity to go check it out until recently. Despite its size, the park wasn’t the easiest place in the world to find. There is a handy little map in the brochure, but that didn’t help much.
The jumping off point for …
