Meet Carlo
Meet Carlo. He is one of the younger residents of the village of Salvacion – a small agricultural village on the slopes of the Mayon Volcano in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. Carlo had just recently graduated from college in Manila. He studied computers. I asked him what he was doing now. Was he on vacation? And he replied that he was looking for …
Meet Paul
Meet Paul. He is the oldest resident in the small village of Salvacion on the lower slopes of the Mayon Volcano in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. He has never married and so has no children and has lived in the house behind us for his entire life. He was born in that house and grew up there, and when his parents passed away …
Legazpi Tricycle Construction and the Fiesta
Legazpi is where I landed in the Philippines and I ended up staying there quite a bit longer than I anticipated. I enjoyed cycling around the nearby countryside and getting a feel for the country. I was feeling very chatty yesterday morning, and I whiled away a lot …
Legazpi and the Mayon Volcano
Legazi is a very friendly and attractive town in the Philippines. It is dominated to the north by the Mayon Volcano, which offers lots of photo ops. It’s a great area to explore by bicycle if you can stand the heat of the summer. The volcano erupted while I was in Legazpi and several climbers, including foreign tourists, were killed. The volcano was shut down …

7:17 a.m. Mayon Backpackers Hostel
I’m back on the rooftop of the hostel. The hostel has a lot of furniture in the rooms and on the roof, which is nice, but it is not the most comfortable. It is made out of some kind of rock-hard substance and then painted to look like wood. The furniture in the common area is made of …

6:33 a.m. Mayon Backpackers Hostel – Legazpi, Philippines
Good morning, all. As you can see from the time, it is somewhat early in the morning. Maybe not farmer early, but it is certainly backpacker early. Everyone else in the place is still sleeping, including my two dreadlocked dorm mates. In fact, I never even saw my two dorm mates …
