South Cross-Island Highway 002 – Tainan & Chihkan Tower
September 20, 2009
Well, I made it to Tainan without incident. The train just raced through the countryside stopping here and there. It was pretty effortless and painless. I can’t say that the scenery was anything to write home about. The east coast of Taiwan is quite scenic. There are mountains and steep cliffs and that sort of thing. But the west part of the island …
Dolphin Watching at Turtle Island
July 20, 2008
A couple of weeks ago I came across a reference to dolphin-watching on the east coast of Taiwan. It sounded interesting, and I decided to check it out. I imagined sitting on the bow of a boat (cold drink in hand) while dolphins frolicked around us and swam in and out of the bow wave – like in the commercials and movies. It …
Palawan Bike Trip 018
April 6, Sunday
I’m back in Puerto Princesa and my flight leaves in three and a half hours. I haven’t written much the final few days mainly because there is no memory left in the NEO. I’ve been reduced to pen and paper. Plus, I’ve cycled for day days and there hasn’t been time in the morning.
My days on Coco Loco were wonderful and just what …
Palawan Bike Trip 002
Saturday, March 8
I feel like my body has been under a ten-ton press and then released. I mean that in a good way. Climbing out of sleep, my whole body felt heavy and slow. Even now over breakfast my arms feel like heavy unwieldy clubs. This is all because I got a good night’s sleep. I slept hard and deep. It feels like the first …
Palawan Bike Trip 001
March 7, 2008
You’d think that after as many bike trips as I’ve gone on, it would be easy to pack and prepare. But it isn’t. Each time it’s like I’ve never done it before. Partway through the packing, you start to think that it would be better not to bring a bicycle. It’s great to have a bicycle as a way of getting around and …
Cambodia 016 – Return to Taipei
I’m at the airport way too early as always. I suppose I could have organized my day a little better and gone out for a cup of coffee in the city this morning at least, but when that time came I actually fell back to sleep thanks to those blackout curtains in my room. I still had enough time to get a coffee, but that would have meant getting to the airport at the normal time instead of at Doug’s patented “let’s reduce the stress as much as possible” time.
Cambodia 004 – Phnom Penh’s Backpacker Areas
February 14, Wednesday, 2007 Phnom Penh
So far I haven’t found a convenient and comfortable place to sit with my NEO. This morning, all I could think of was this coffee shop attached to a gas station variety store. It’s comfortable enough, but there aren’t enough tables to make it convenient. I feel like I can’t stay that long. I was also sitting at a table …
Cambodia 001 – Taipei to Phnom Penh
6:13 a.m. Saturday February 10 (On the airport bus)
So far, things have been going as well as can be expected. I’m on the airport bus and my bicycle is somewhat safely stowed underneath. I was worried of course that I wouldn’t be able to put my bike on the bus, but in the end, the bus pulled up, the luggage door opened on the side …
